Description
Follow the evolution of #Thanksgiving through time from the Puritans' holy day to today's family feast and homecoming with a multi-sensory, 90-minute guided tour of Strawbery Banke Museum! Learn how #Thanksgiving transcended time, place, and culture to become the uniquely American holiday celebrated today. First, visit Pitt Tavern where the smells of baking pies, sounds of clinking glasses, and the busy Staver's family await visitors in Pitt Tavern for Thanksgiving in 1777. Next, experience the height of the Victorian period and a Thanksgiving celebration that shares many traditions with celebrations today. In the Shapiro House in 1919, share the experience of a Jewish immigrant family who has recently come to Portsmouth from Ukraine and are learning about American Thanksgiving while keeping traditional customs. Last, visit the Abbott House in 1943 when Portsmouth is in the midst of World War II. The war has changed jobs, industry, food, and education – Thanksgiving was no exception.
