NH Art Association October Exhibtions

UnSpoken - Group Member Exhibition

The New Hampshire Art Association (NHAA) is proud to announce its newest member exhibition, UnSpoken, on view at the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery. Featuring work from artists across New England, the exhibition invites viewers to consider the ways words, letters, and silence shape the human experience.

The show centers on works that incorporate handwriting, text, or letterforms as a visual or conceptual element. Artists were also invited to take the theme in other directions, exploring silence, secrecy, symbolism, communication without words, and the resonance of things left unsaid. The result is a diverse collection of works that transform language into image, gesture, and symbol.

This and That and The Things That Make Me Happy by Chris and Rose Robinson - Printmaking, Drawing, and Sculpture

This and That and Things That Make Me Happy, an exhibition by mother-and-daughter artists Chris and Rose Robinson, features printmaking, drawing, and sculpture as a visual representation of their ever-changing journeys through life. Years of shaping one another’s lives have also meant shaping one another’s work—through conversations about process, exchanging feedback, or simply noticing the details of daily life together. Decorative patterns call to mind the quilts they’ve sewn side by side; illustrated books from Rose’s childhood resurface in shared memory; even a drive through the countryside can spark a question that lingers: How would you mix the color of that sky? Though their work may appear very different at first glance, the exhibition explores how these shared influences reemerge when placed together.

Beyond by Larry Smukler - photography

In Beyond, photographer Larry Smukler invites viewers into a world where the veil of the familiar is lifted. Water shimmers into a dreamscape, and shadows stretch into mystery. Each of the 20 photographs in the exhibition is less a record of place than an evocation of feeling—transporting us into feelings that linger just beyond words.

Tarot Nouveau by Mandela Imari and Alyssa Rockwell - pen and ink drawing

Tarot Nouveau, a two-person exhibition featuring the work of artists Mandela Imari and Alyssa Rockwell, reimagines the archetypal imagery of the Major Arcana through pen and ink drawings, blending symbolism, spirituality, and personal vision. Imari and Rockwell first met during the 2024 Fledgling exhibition at NHAA, where their shared experiences navigating a difficult art school environment quickly forged a connection. Both found that their practices resisted the structures of academia, and each chose to continue developing as self-taught artists. Their collaboration in Tarot Nouveau reflects not only this independence but also a mutual fascination with the occult and the transformative possibilities of divinity.

All exhibitions will be on view at Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery, 136 State Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801, from Oct. 1 to Nov. 2, with an opening reception on Oct. 3, 5-8 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 11 am to 5 pm, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m, and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
