"My 16th annual solo exhibition at Kennedy Gallery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire – Lost and Found – reflects a conscious choice to reinvent myself after a period of loss and intense grief this past year and includes incorporating some “found” pieces into the show.
I grew up with a love of old, discarded things, passed down through my maternal grandparents, and the frame for “Nostalgia” was found in an antique store (probably not old, but it is thrifted). Viewing a marsh through the meadow’s edge is new subject matter for me, and the eclectic frame offers a unique look to this piece.
Another found piece in the show is my painting from 2008, “Foggy Inlet, Maine,” which I discovered in a box in my studio and decided to include with this show at a retro price. It also features a meadow in a different style than the one in “Nostalgia.
Fluctuations are a part of everyone’s lives. The commonality of change and not only enduring, but also growing through difficult experiences, is what I hope to share in this emotive body of work. For me, painting is an experiential process of both losing oneself and finding elements that are redeeming, meaningful and ultimately uplifting. If people can reframe their challenges more positively through the lens I have created, then my work will have expanded beyond its personal meaning to be enriching and comforting to others. The trauma of loss can be mitigated and molded through a healing process, opening the door to possibility."
