The Moffatt-Ladd House & Garden is a historic house museum located in downtown Portsmouth, N.H. The purpose of the Moffatt-Ladd House & Garden is to interpret American, New Hampshire, and Portsmouth history through the lives and possessions of the inhabitants of the house, both free and enslaved. A National Historic Landmark, the museum has been open to the public since 1912 and illustrates history through 12 period furnished rooms demonstrating 150 years of life in the home.
The Moffatt-Ladd House & Garden is owned and operated by the National Society of Colonial Dames in America in the State of New Hampshire.
DESCRIPTION:
The primary responsibilities of the Museum Guide are to greet visitors, conduct museum tours of the ca.1763 Moffatt-Ladd House, and provide general security of the collection. Guides also assist with daily museum operations such as tour admissions, museum shop coverage, and opening and closing the museum. Additional opportunities to assist with public programs, school group visits, and private events will arise throughout the season. Paid training and free parking are provided.
This part-time position is perfect for retirees, students, those interested in museum education, and others looking for flexible hours in a beautiful, historic setting.
The Moffatt-Ladd House season begins with training in April but the museum is open June 1 through the middle of October. Most guides work 5-15 hours per week.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A high school diploma and one or more years of related experience is required; a Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Applicants should have excellent interpersonal skills, enjoy working with people of all ages, and have an interest in museums, history, and decorative arts. Knowledge of basic computer operations and customer service or retail experience is a plus. Applicants must be able to sit or stand for extended periods, climb stairs, and work in historic settings that are often hot, humid, or dusty. Applicants must be available both weekdays and weekends, have a flexible schedule, and be willing to work 1-2 days a week.
