Description

Seacoast Repertory Theatre’s Red Light Series presents A New Brain A composer has a nightmare during a medical emergency. Gordon collapses into his lunch and awakes in the hospital, surrounded by his maritime-enthusiast lover, his mother, a co-worker, the doctor, and the nurses. Reluctantly, he had been composing a song for a children’s television show that features a frog – Mr. Bungee – and the specter of this large green character and the unfinished work haunts him throughout his medical ordeal. With music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by William Finn and James Lapine, A New Brain is a musical theatre lover’s musical. The duo won a Tony for their work on Falsettos and originated the show with the help of Jonathan Groff (Hamilton, Spring Awakening, and Mindhunter). How is this different from our regular professional productions? Great question. Red Light is for risk taking. While all of our shows are original stagings - no replica shows here - Red Light is where our artists go to get truly wild. Think of Red Light like a collaborative passion project shared between artists obsessed with doing new and cool things. Who are the artists? Well they’re everyone. They’re partly the team behind the hit series Mad Haus, which each month-or-so brings a fresh new party/performance, totally unique, for one night only - a collective of multidisciplinary artists, musicians, puppeteers, vaudevillians, and monsters lead by the Mad Men of Oopsy Daisy Inc. They’ve also enlisted the help of some of the 150 artists, artisans, designers, directors, and general handy folk we employ each year to help make A New Brain happen. They’re all working together to bring forward what we think is one of the most imaginative and compelling books that has come forward in recent history. It’s not a smash Broadway hit. It is the sort of thing a theatre like ours would usually not be able to make financially viable. We’re going to try anyway. We hope you’ll join us. Music & Lyrics by William Finn Book by William Finn & James Lapine Directed by the Mad Men of Oopsy Daisy, Inc Starring Jason Faria Sam St. Jean Alyssa Dumas Ben Hart Andrea Lyons Alden Caple Michelle Faria Jonathan Acorn Linette Miles J.M.
