The Portsmouth Historic Sites Associates are pleased to present its annual winter symposium, “Life and Death in the Piscataqua Region” on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at St. John’s Lodge Masonic Temple, 351 Middle Street (corner of Miller Avenue and Middle Street) in Portsmouth, NH. Doors open at 9:30AM and the program begins at 10AM and concludes at 3PM. This year Jim Craig of the USS Albacore Park will speak on “A Measureless Peril: Wartime Hysteria, Spies, Surrenders at Sea, and German U-boats off Portsmouth in WWII.” Gerry Ward of the MFA Boston and the Portsmouth Historical Society will speak on “Four Centuries of Portsmouth Furniture, Richard Adams of the Wentworth-Lear Association will speak on “Notable Denizens of Portsmouth's South Cemetery, and Karen Raynes, independent researcher, will introduce and share a portion of her recent documentary film, “The Queens of Hampton Beach: The History of the Carnival Queens & Miss Hampton Beach Beauty Pageant 1915-2015". There also will be updates and presentations on current and upcoming projects at our member sites. Raffle baskets and sale tables of site-related items and publications are another feature of the symposium. Tickets reserved in advance (by March 3 at 4pm) are $15. Tickets purchased at the door are $20. Reservations are recommended. All proceeds benefit the Portsmouth Historic Sites Associates. This is always a popular program, so make your reservations early. The ticket price includes the day-long program of four lectures, continental breakfast and a lunch of homemade soup, bread, and dessert. For reservations, call 603-436-8221 or 603-430-7968.
