Description

Secrets, Scalawags & Spirits of the Isles of Shoals Tales of pirates, ethereal maidens and elusive ghost ships have long graced the Isles of Shoals with an aura of mystery, romance and a touch of the macabre. Poet Celia Thaxter chronicled these tales in her classically 19th century style which greatly enhanced these stories and thus, the allure of these captivating islands. Presented here are nearly factual and highly imaginative versions of the Shoals most infamous legends, along with Celia’s little-known ghostly protest poem. Fact or fancy, lore or legend – you be the judge. Ann Beattie Ann is an educator with a fascination for the Isles of Shoals and its rich history. She combs through historical records, salt cod recipes, and journals of Shoalers in an effort to capture and revive the unique stories that bring Shoals history to life. Ann is a former president of the Isles of Shoals Historical and Research Association, leads tours of the Shoals and hosts history programs on Star Island. Wendy Lull Wendy has been at the helm of the Seacoast Science Center in Rye, NH since it opened in 1992. A former president of the Portsmouth Athenaeum and Board member of the New England Museum Association, Wendy been recognized among the Outstanding Women in Business by New Hampshire Magazine Business Review and among New Hampshire’s Women of Distinction by New Hampshire Magazine. This event is free and open to the public – registration required. Friday, February 24 @ 4:00 pm
