Description
By Paul Osborn
Produced by Generic Theater
To celebrate Generic Theater’s 35th year of producing plays – as well as the Players’ Ring’s 25th anniversary season – we return to a favorite of ours: the 2004 Spotlight Best Play, Mornings at Seven by Paul Osborn.
Set in the Midwest in 1938, Mornings at Seven offers a slice of American family life in a much simpler time.
Four sisters, three husbands, a nephew and his fiancée make up the warm hearted, wrangling cast of characters. When the play opens, nephew Homer, 35 years old and still living at home, is expected to bring Myrtle, his fiancée of seven years, to meet the folks. Myrtle's arrival sets off a sequence of events that turns this extended dysfunctional family upside down.
Homer's reluctant move into marriage unearths old fault lines in the continuing love stories of his long-mingled aunts and uncles. Romance still jars this family well into the autumn of their lives. It brings out their quirks, spells, and foibles, as well as their abiding strengths.
Founded in late 1981 by a group of friends interested in having fun on stage while offering plays for a low ticket price, Generic Theater has evolved into a respected theater company with a reputation for taking on artistically challenging and socially relevant material. Wacky comedies and serious drama have always been included in our work, and "straight" plays as well as original and improvisation-based pieces. Generic Theater also produces a series of play readings most months at the Ring.
