Description

Join us at 4 Broadway, Dover, NH for a blood drive Friday, 2/5/16 from 9am to 2pm.

  February 2016

During Black History Month in February, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood to maintain a diverse and sufficient supply for patients. Severe winter weather and seasonal illnesses can deplete the blood supply at this time of year. Please use these key messages to encourage healthy donors to make an appointment to give.

• Inclement winter weather and seasonal illnesses can make it difficult for the American Red Cross to ensure a sufficient blood supply at this time of year. Healthy, eligible donors are urged to give blood this February.

• Maintaining a blood supply as diverse as the patients who receive blood is important. Patients are less likely to have complications from blood given by a person of the same ethnicity.

• Blood donors of all types, especially those with types AB, O, B negative and A negative, are needed to ensure the shelves are stocked for patients in need.

o Type AB donors have the universal plasma type, which can be given to patients of all blood types. There is a constant, often critical, need for type AB plasma. Plasma can be collected during a whole blood donation.

o Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be transfused to patients with any blood type.

o Type O positive is the most common blood type and can be transfused to Rh-positive patients of any blood type.

o Types A and B negative can be transfused to Rh-positive or negative patients.

• [FOR DRIVES WITH DOUBLE RED CELL DONATIONS ONLY] Eligible donors with types O, B negative or A negative blood are encouraged to give double red cells.

• On the day of your donation, complete a RapidPass to save time. RapidPass lets you complete the pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online from the convenience of a computer at home or work. To get started, visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass and follow the instructions.

• Blood donors with the most recent version of the Red Cross Blood Donor App can now view their health history information, including blood pressure, hemoglobin levels and pulse rate, on their donor card within the app. The donor card in the app can also be used as your official form of identification when donating. Download the app by texting “BLOODAPP” to 90999 or searching “American Red Cross” in app stores.
