The Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra’s (PSO) 22nd mainstage season continues Sunday, March 24 at 3:30 p.m. at The Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH. All attendees are invited to an “Inside the Music” pre-concert talk with Artistic Director and Conductor John Page at 2 p.m.
Founded in 1997, the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra is comprised of more than 65 local professionals, educators, dedicated amateurs and advanced students. The performance will feature Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 with soloist Sarita Uranovsky and Brahms Symphony No. 4. “This is a concert about reveling in the lush sounds of the strings,” comments John Page, Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra’s artistic director.
“The Vaughan Williams piece is unashamedly romantic and evocative—it was the soundtrack of the movie ‘Master and Commander’. The Prokofiev concerto celebrates the full virtuosic and lyrical range of the violin in all its glory and the Brahms symphony is one of the few pieces universally beloved by orchestras and highlights the depth and beauty of the string section.” A native of Cape Town, South Africa, violinist Sarita Uranovsky has enjoyed an exceptionally active and diverse career as soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, orchestral musician and teacher across the globe.
A founding member and violinist of MONTAGE Music Society, she can be heard on Montage Music Society’s “Starry Night Project” released on MSR Classics and has recorded and broadcast for both the BBC and SABC as well as appearing on numerous recordings for BMOP (Boston Modern Orchestra Project). Uranovsky performs regularly in groups around Boston and in the United Kingdom. She is the recipient of numerous awards, is on the music faculty at Tufts University, the MIT Emerson Scholarship Program and maintains a private teaching studio. Uranovsky holds an Artist Diploma from Boston University and a Bachelors (with Honors) and Masters (with Distinction) from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama
